Whitley Bay Carnival 2020

Lock-down carnival is an invitation for absolutely everyone, wherever they are, to get together apart and celebrate community, belonging and making meaningful positive things happen whatever the barriers might be.

We had planned to invite everyone to come to Whitley Bay to see our annual thousand strong costumed parade and enjoy three days of street music, theatre, circus, food and general togetherness over the late May bank holiday but with the Covid-19 global lockdown that just isn’t possible this year so instead we invite you to decorate your place, put messages and bunting in your windows, make a fun costume, dress up, have a picnic, learn a dance and maybe a song (we will be showing you how) that we can all do together and at the time we would have been welcoming the carnival parade …party like its 2020.

We will be sharing ideas, how to videos and zoom tuition meet ups.. and on the day we hope to go live on Facebook and find a way to showcase all your pictures, words, videos and more…think ‘band aid’ meets Thursday NHS and key workers applause. We want you to make little videos of how you made your picnic, bunting, costumes or decorations, anything you do towards the day. We want to see your windows, see you in your costumes , we want to see your dances, hear your songs and we want to make such a noise at 2pm that we can be heard for miles.

This is just a save the date… more news to follow

Whitley Bay Big Local supports Whitley Bay Carnival.

Would just like to say that SALTo Arts have no connection to any current street arts activity planned for Park View - if we do produce anything we will be doing it in consultation with the council and announcing it here and on our page ...

As you know our SALTo Arts team are working with Whitley Bay Big Local on the Creative Civic Change programme ... so in the light of the current pedestrianisation plans for Whitley Bay we thought we should explore some people powered Wheeley ideas....

So..Leave the car at home, Feel mighty wheel. Be the high rollers at the Bay.
Come on skates, on skateboards, with shopping trolleys, on mobility scooters, pushing bogies, on bikes, trikes or heelys. We want to build for the future. Push it, pull it or ride it.

By the end of the summer we want to hold a parade of wheels along the seafront. There will be races and fancy dress. Work with your mates, with your families, with your dog.

We’re going to post some idea videos to get you thinking but as long as it runs on wheels (and isn’t a car) you’re in.

What do you think?
